This led them to celebrate themselves as superior to soldiers and sailors. ![]() They began to justify their existence by invoking their institutional traditions, their many martial engagements, and their claim to be the nation's oldest and proudest military institution. ![]() Rather than look forward and actively seek out a mission that could secure their existence, late nineteenth-century Marines looked backward and embraced the past. The process by which a maligned group of nineteenth-century naval policemen began to consider themselves to be elite warriors benefited from the active engagement of Marine officers with the Corps’ historical record as justification for its very being. This work argues that the Marine Corps could not and would not settle on a mission, and therefore it turned to an image to ensure its institutional survival. As neither a land-based organization like the Army nor an entirely sea-based one like the Navy, the Corps' missions overlapped with both institutions. It did not yet mean something distinct to be a Marine, either to themselves or to the public at large. The Marine Corps did not play a major role, except for once, in warfare against native Americans as did the US Army. My grandfather was a Marine, my father was a Marine and I’m a Marine. This blanket is so important in recognizing that there has been Native Americans in the Marine Corps and at the front contributing to the greater good as did the code talkers and many more to come. I’m a US Marine of Native American ancestry. But, he still has his eyes on the heavy wool Pendleton blankets we just pulled out for winter. I had let Captain Zach open it and he seemed pleased, so I let him take it home without returning it. But, for the novelty of the USMC logo, we paid full price for a small, lightweight wool/cotton blend lap throw. Paying the premium price for this blanket, I was hoping this would be the same quality and weight as the wool blankets we already own. We've been a Pendleton family for generations, so own many blankets, shirts, hats from the mill also, we tend to give Pendleton as gifts for birthdays and Christmas. Figured it would be the perfect gift for two Marines who just settled in Denver. I bought this for our Captain Zach and Seargeant Joanne. The USMC wool blanket was a terrific Christmas gift. ![]()
